Joyous celebrations took place in Shane Lowry's home club, Esker Hills in Tullamore in County Offaly, after his Open Championship win at Royal Portrush.

Shane Lowry became the fourth Irish player to win the Open in 12 years and the first Irish player to win it on the island of Ireland.

More than 100 supporters, including his grand uncle, Tommy Newman, gathered earlier to watch the local hero being crowned the 2019 Champion Golfer.

Shane Lowry spent all his early teens practicing and playing at this club. His score card from 2005 hangs proudly in the bar from when he broke the Esker Hills course record at 18 years of age.

Four years later, he won the Irish Open as an amateur player.

Shane Lowry comes from a family steeped in sport. His father Brendan and two uncles Mick and Sean won All Ireland football medals for Offaly in 1982.
