A public event to commemorate those who died in both world wars, including over 60,000 Irish men and women, has taken place at the War Memorial Gardens at Islandbridge in Dublin.

The annual Royal British Legion event has grown in popularity in recent years and some 1,000 people were expected to attend the commemoration.

Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan represented the Government at the event.

He was joined by church and political representatives from Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Antrim, Limerick and Fermanagh.

Relatives of those who died in both wars were also present.

Ambassadors from 13 countries were also in attendance and wreaths were laid by various organisations.
