Garda figures show decline in number of road offences detected

Garda road policing figures have shown significant decreases in the number of road offences detected when compared to this time last year.

The figures show statistics for the period from the start of this year up to the end of July.

Detections for dangerous driving were down by 26% and down 3% for driving while intoxicated.

On Fixed Charge Notices, the number of notices issued for speeding was down by 22%.

The figures showed that the number of people using a mobile phone while driving was down by 8%.

The number of notices issued for not wearing a seatbelt was down by 19%.

The number of people killed on the roads was also down 6%, from 93 to 87.

The number of fatal collisions also fell by 5%, from 86 to 82.

In a statement gardaí said they were committed to reducing the number of, and severity of road collisions.

An analysis of trends in recorded breaches of road traffic and transport legislation indicates a downward trend to the end of July of this year.
