An investigation is under way into an incident in which a woman who was 32 weeks' pregnant was beaten and hospitalised.

Her baby was stillborn some hours after the incident, which occurred in Listowel late on Saturday or early on Sunday morning.

Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster is to carry out a post-mortem examination to establish how and why the baby girl was stillborn.

A man in his 20s was arrested and questioned in connection with the assault on the woman, but was later released without charge.

A file on the case will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The woman is being treated for her injuries at University Hospital Kerry.
