BMW in Ireland has confirmed that cars sold in Ireland will be included in a safety recall affecting over 300,000 cars sold in the UK.

An investigation by the BBC's Watchdog consumer programme, to be broadcast tonight, reveals an issue with a number of BMW models that causes the cars to cut out completely when they are being driven.

An initial recall was introduced after the death of a man in England, whose car crashed while trying to avoid a stalled BMW.

The cars being recalled were made between 2007 and 2011 and include both petrol and diesel models.

They include 1 Series, 3 Series, X1 Series and Z4 cars.

BMW in Ireland says it is now looking at cars sold and registered in Ireland in the same period as part of the recall but does not yet know how many cars in Ireland will be affected.
