Age Action is urging communities to help ensure that their older neighbours remain safe and well in their homes as Met Éireann forecasts snow and icy conditions for many parts of Ireland today.

Justin Moran, Head of Advocacy and Communications with Age Action, said: "If there is an older person living in your neighbourhood, particularly one who is living alone or might have trouble getting about, we would encourage you to visit or call them to check that they are ok - don't depend on others to do it.

"People can be reluctant to look in on neighbours as they don't want to seem intrusive but our experience is that it's always appreciated and a great source of reassurance for someone to know their neighbours are thinking about them," said Mr Moran.

"We are urging older people not to venture out in slippery and dangerous conditions but if they must, to check to see if their neighbours could help out," added Mr Moran.
