One of Ireland's best-known weather forecasters is to retire from Met Éireann after 37 years.

Gerald Fleming, who turns 60 this month, will step down as Head of Forecasting at Met Éireann next month.

Mr Fleming said he has enjoyed his working years and while he leaves Met Éireann, he would like to continue his passionate interest in meteorology through his work with the World Meterology Association.

He told RTÉ News he is in good health and wants to focus on other professional matters, as well as other interests now that his three children are reared.

He stopped broadcasting on RTÉ weather bulletins nine years ago, but is still a firm viewing favourite thanks to his relaxed style and trademark wink.

He began broadcasting on air in 1984, using manual tools including the 'pointy sticks', in an age when there were no satellite or radars available to forecasting.
