Dr Denis Higgins faces allegations surround patient's care

A Medical Council inquiry has adjourned into allegations that a Galway GP failed to provide appropriate care to a patient who was suffering from a major cardiac, or respiratory condition.

The doctor is ill and cannot attend.

It is alleged that Dr Denis Higgins, based at Galway Primary Care, did not arrange for the patient’s immediate referral to an Emergency Department around 22 February 2015.

It is also alleged that he failed to carry out or arrange for an electrocardiogram (ECG) on the patient.

The inquiry was also adjourned yesterday as Dr Higgins was unable to attend as he was unwell.

Today, the inquiry heard that the GP had submitted a medical certificate to the Fitness to Practise Committee, as requested, and that Dr Higgins intends to fully defend the case.

The committee has adjourned the inquiry to another date to be decided.
