More than half of people surveyed by the General Election 2024 Exit Poll believe the Government has not gone far enough on climate change, while one-in-five believe it has gone too far.
The findings are detailed in the RTÉ, Irish Times, TG4, Trinity College Dublin Exit Poll, carried out by Ipsos B&A.
In response to a question on individual voters' views of the Government's approach to climate change, 51% said "the current Government has not gone far enough".
A fifth (20%) said the current Government has gone "too far" and 29% that the current Government's actions "are about right".
More young people than older people believe the Government has "not gone far enough" on the issue, with 60% of 18-24 year olds raising concerns, 63% of 25-34 year olds, 50% of 35-49 year olds, 47% of 50-64 year olds and 46% of over 65s.
The percentage of people who believe the Government has "gone too far" on climate change is far lower across all age groups, with 15% of 18-24 year olds agreeing with the statement, 17% of 25-34 year olds, 25% of 35-49 year olds, 20% of 50-64 year olds and 16% of over 65s.
By region, 62% of Dublin respondents believe the Government has not gone far enough on climate change - a figure that compares to 48% in the rest of Leinster, 44% in Munster and 50% in Connacht/Ulster.
A separate regional breakdown shows that 13% of respondents in Dublin believe the Government has gone too far. That compares to 23% in the rest of Leinster, 21% in Munster and 22% in Connacht/Ulster.
The Social Democrats have the most Exit Poll supporters who believe the Government has not gone far enough at 84%, followed by the Green Party (77%), Labour (68%), People Before Profit-Solidarity (65%), Sinn Fein (54%), Fianna Fail (47%), Fine Gael (44%), Independents (44%), Aontú (37%), Independent Ireland (33%) and other smaller parties (32%).
In a separate party breakdown on who agrees with the view that the Government has gone too far, other smaller parties not represented in the most recent Dáil are highest at 56%, followed by Independent Ireland (46%), Aontú (43%), Independents (29%), Sinn Féin (28%), Fianna Fáil (14%), Fine Gael (13%), People Before Profit-Solidarity (9%), Labour (6%), and both the Social Democrats and Green Party on 2% each.
The Exit Poll took place in-person outside 253 polling stations covering each of the 43 Dáil constituencies.
The sample size was 5,018, and the margin of error is 1.4%.
