The public appears to be divided on whether it trusts politicians with 53% of people saying politicians are trustworthy and 45% saying they are not, it is suggested.

The finding is outlined in the RTÉ, The Irish Times, TG4, Trinity College Dublin Exit Poll, carried out by Ipsos B&A on Friday 29 November and carried out in-person, outside polling stations at 253 locations across the country, covering each of the 43 Dáil constituencies.

The sample size was 5,018 and the margin of error was 1.4%.

Politicians were considered more trustworthy by older age groups, with the percentage of people telling the Exit Poll they trust politicians rising from 37% among 18-34 year olds, to 42% for 25-34 year olds, 52% for 35-49 year olds, 57% for 50-64 year olds and 68% for over 65s.

This also means they are least trusted by younger age groups, with the exit poll suggesting 61% of 18-24 year olds believe politicians are untrustworthy, 58% of 25-34 year olds, 48% of 35-49 year olds, 42% of 50-64 year olds and 30% of over 65s.

A party breakdown showed politicians were most trusted by Green Party voters (78%), followed by Fine Gael voters (73%), Fianna Fáil (66%), Social Democrats (63%), Labour (59%), Independent Ireland (56%), independent candidates (38%), People Before Profit-Solidarity (37%), Sinn Féin (32%), Aontú (32%) and other smaller parties (21%).

A party breakdown also showed politicians were least trusted by the other smaller parties not represented in the most recent Dáil (79%), Aontú (68%), Sinn Féin (67%), People Before Profit-Solidarity (61%), independents (60%), Independent Ireland (44%), Labour (41%), Social Democrats (37%), Fianna Fáil (33%), Fine Gael (25%) and the Green Party (20%).
