This year's Junior Cycle results will be released on Wednesday, 8 October.

They will be made available to students in their schools on the day.

More students will be awarded Distinction and Higher Merits this year after changes were made to the Junior Cycle grading bands.

While there are the same number of grade bands as before, the top four grade descriptors - Distinction, Higher Merit, Merit and Achieved - are being evenly distributed in bands of fifteen percentage points.

This means a distinction will now be awarded for a score of 85% or more, and a Higher Merit will be awarded for a score beginning at 70%.

Under the old system, a Distinction was awarded for a score of 90% or more, and a Higher Merit for a score beginning at 75%.

When this change was announced earlier this year the Department of Education stated that the revised bands would provide students, parents and teachers with some increased clarity about their level of attainment.

It said the revised bands remained sufficiently broad however to avoid placing pressure on students to achieve marginal examination gains.
