Gardaí have reopened a number of areas around O'Connell Street in Dublin city centre that were sealed off following a serious assault this morning.

A man, aged in his 40s, was seriously injured in the incident which happened on Westmoreland Street at around 6.30am.

He has been brought to St James's Hospital for treatment.

Six areas on O'Connell Street, O'Connell Bridge and Westmoreland Street were cordoned off while technical examinations were carried out.

Businesses are now operating as normal.

Gardaí said investigations are ongoing.
