Dozens of people have taken part in a protest against the fencing of the banks of the Grand Canal in Dublin city centre.

Some of the protesters pulled down barriers on the canal bank near Baggot Street Bridge.

The protest started outside the offices of the Department of Integration at Milesian Plaza where there were speeches calling for the fences to be removed and for accommodation to be provided for asylum seekers.

Separately, there are 34 tents on the canal banks around Mount Street Bridge.

RTÉ News spoke to three men who were camping there who said they were from Palestine and had arrived in Ireland in the last few days.

Most of the tents are within fenced off areas but a few are on a sloping section of the canal bank which has not been fenced off.
