A 94-year-old woman had a lucky escape after a large tree fell on her house during Storm Betty overnight in the south Dublin suburb of Rathmines.

The storm left tens of thousands without electricity, caused flooding and made roads dangerous with fallen trees, branches and debris as it crossed much of the south of the country last night and into the early hours of this morning.

June Judd said she was woken up around midnight by the storm and saw then that the tree was still standing.

"I went back to bed and then I heard something crash and I had a terrible pain in my head," she said.

She looked out her window later on and saw the large tree had fallen towards her house.

She says: "I was amazed. It has been standing here for a long time."

Meanwhile, workers and volunteers at the famous Clontarf Public Baths in the capital have said their local "paradise" has been left "destroyed" by the impact of the storm.
