A 27-year-old man has been before a special district court sitting in Cork, charged with the murder of a man in Co Kerry earlier this year.

Kane Hornyak, of Doon Road, Ballybunion, Co Kerry, is the third person to be charged with the murder of 44-year old Gerard 'Ger' Kennelly last May.

Mr Kennelly was socialising in the north Kerry village of Knockanure, when he was stabbed shortly after midnight on 27 May.

Emergency services were called to the scene and he was pronounced dead there a short time later.

A garda investigation began under a senior investigating officer.

Detective Garda Donnacha Coakley told the court he arrested Mr Hornyak earlier today, after he had received directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions to put the murder charge to him.

He said Mr Hornyak made no reply.

Judge Joanne Carroll remanded him in custody and directed that he receive appropriate medical care while in custody.

Solicitor Pádraig O'Connell was assigned to Mr Hornyak on free legal aid. He said an application for bail will be made in the High Court at a later date.

Mr Hornyak is the third person to be charged with the murder.

A man and a woman were also charged in Listowel last Thursday.

All three will be back before the district court in Tralee next Wednesday.
