Teenager released on bail over Temple Bar tourist robbery

A teenager has been released on bail after appearing before the Children's Court in Dublin following his arrest over the robbery of an English tourist in Temple Bar on Friday night.

The case is listed for mention again on 5 September.

Garda David Dolan said the teenager - a 17-year-old from Dublin - was arrested shortly before midnight on Saturday in relation to the alleged offence, which took place on Fownes Street Upper shortly after 10pm.

He said the injured party, who was in Dublin to attend a football tournament, had been out with two friends and had met another man from England that night.

He said a fight had ensued between a large group of people.

He said the alleged victim in this case received a punch to the head from an unknown other male and he said the accused had then allegedly punched him in the face with a closed fist before rummaging through his front pocket and taking a black leather wallet.

It is then alleged that he entered a nearby Centra shop and tried to purchase an item.

Staff refused him the contactless payment and he left the store.

Garda Dolan said the injured party had sustained bruises to his face and neck and had a suspected broken nose. He was taken to St James's Hospital, but did not stay for treatment.

He said gardaí had obtained clear CCTV footage from the Centra store and further CCTV footage from the scene of the incident.

The injured man is due to attend at a medical appointment in the UK today.

Brian Keenan, solicitor for the defendant, said there was no suggestion his client was involved in the assault of anyone else and that no one could say what injuries the man in this case had sustained.

Judge Deirdre Gearty said the alleged offence was a serious one. The teenager was released on bail on the condition he stay out of the Dublin 2 area and adhere to a curfew between 10pm and 6am.

He must also sign on three times a week at his local garda station and agree to be of good behaviour and avoid intoxicants.

The accused teenager attended court today with his mother and was visibly upset during today's hearing.
