A ceremony was held in Dublin this afternoon to remember the lives of people lost during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Recent figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre show that 76% of those who died with Covid-19 were aged over 75.
The event, which was held in the Unitarian Church in Dublin, was organised by ALONE, the organisation that supports older people to age at home.
The ceremony, led by Reverend Bridget Spain, was attended by staff, management, trustees and older people who benefit from the work of ALONE.
The charity lost over 500 people from its direct community since the Covid-19 pandemic began.
CEO Sean Moynihan said there has also been great loss in ALONE's network of partner organisations.
"The past 20 months have been extremely hard on all of Irish society," he said.
"But to those that lost loved ones and couldn't mourn them fully, we really feel for today."
ALONE said there is now an opportunity for the country to use what it has learned about current social infrastructure and improve society for the better.
The service was streamed live and it can be accessed here.
