The Department of Justice has said that it is no longer considering to use a hotel in Conamara to house international protection applicants.

A protest took place outside the Carna Bay Hotel earlier this year, after it emerged that the accommodation facility had been offered to the State as a potential IPAS centre.

The round-the-clock demonstration was lifted after the assessment process was stalled, to allow for the examination of the hotel's viability to offer regular services for visitors to the area.

Demonstrators had argued that the building was central to the local economy and were also critical of the level of engagement they had with officials from the Department of Integration.

In a statement, the department said that the decision to discontinue the proposal in relation to the Carna Hotel was based on considerations regarding access to services in the area and "the current level of need in the sector".
