One of the last independently owned local newspapers in the country has been acquired by the Iconic Media Group.

The Mayo News was put on the market by current owner Dermot Berry a number of years ago.

The title was established in 1892 and is one of four local papers published in the county each week.

The deal is subject to regulatory approval.

The Mayo News has been in the ownership of the Berry family for a number of decades.

Should the sale be approved, it would increase the footprint of the Iconic Media Group, which already owns over 15 local weekly titles. These include The Donegal Democrat, The Limerick Leader and The Leinster Express.

The sale would leave just a handful of regional publications in independent ownership, following purchase of several papers by larger media groups over the last two decades.
