An online book of condolence has been opened in memory of the young family who died in a collision on the M6 in Co Galway last week.

Mayor of Galway Colette Connolly has described the deaths of Karzan Sabah, his wife Shahen Qasm and their daughter Lina as "incomprehensible and devastating".

Opening the book, she expressed her sympathies to relatives and friends of the deceased, as well as to the wider Kurdish community in Ireland.

Condolences can be expressed via a link on the Galway City Council website.

Meanwhile, a campaign to help cover the cost of repatriating the remains of the family to Kurdistan has raised over €85,000 in less than 24 hours.

More than 3,000 people have donated to the fund on the GoFundMe website.

Friends of Karzan Sabah from NUI Galway are organising the campaign.

They say they have been left "devastated and heartbroken" by the loss of their friend.

They have expressed hope that their efforts will bring some comfort to the couple’s relatives in Erbil, in the Kurdish region of Iraq.
