Tributes have been paid to the family who were killed in last Thursday's three-vehicle road crash on the M6 near Ballinasloe in Co Galway.
They were Karzan Sabah, his wife Shahen Qasm and their eight-month-old daughter Lina.
The family were Kurdish but had been living in Galway for some time.
NUI Galway has described Mr Sabah as a highly-regarded researcher, who had recently submitted his PhD thesis to the university.
In a statement, NUI Galway extended its sympathy to the family and friends of Mr Sabah.
It is understood the 37-year-old student had hoped to embark on further research in the coming weeks.
The university said it is deeply saddened by "such an untimely loss, in such tragic circumstances".
Chaplaincy and support services are being offered to friends and colleagues impacted by the tragedy.
Members of the Kurdish community have been expressing sympathy at their deaths and a photo of the family has been posted on the Facebook page of Kurdish Nergz Ireland.
Gardaí are continuing to investigate the crash in which a fourth person, the driver of the other car, was killed.
He has been named as Jonas Adam Lach from Portumna, Co Galway.
Another motorist, travelling in a third car, was taken to hospital after sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.
