A Sligo-based Sinn Féin councillor has been selected to take over the European Parliament seat of his party colleague Matt Carthy.
Mr Carthy was elected to the Dáil in the Cavan - Monaghan constituency last month.
Vacancies to the European Parliament are filled from a replacement list that all candidates submit when they lodge their election papers.
Councillor Chris MacManus was among a number of people on Sinn Féin's replacement list for the 15 county Midlands North West constituency.
Several others on the list, including Darren O'Rourke and Mairead Farrell, were also elected to the Dáil in February.
Mr MacManus' elevation to the European Parliament means his seat on Sligo County Council will now have to be filled.
