The chief executive of the company established to oversee Galway's selection as European Capital of Culture is stepping down.

Hannah Kiely is parting company with Galway 2020 after extensive criticism locally about the manner in which preparations for the project are progressing.

Since Galway was designated Capital of Culture in July 2016 there have been a number of personnel changes and the role of creative director remains unfilled after the previous incumbent stepped down.

Aideen McGinley, Chairperson of Galway 2020, thanked Ms Kiely for her "significant contribution, energy, passion and dedication" to the project.

In a statement, Galway 2020 said it will allocate €12.7 million in funding to 27 projects across the city and county.
