YouTube has announced a new control feature that allows parents to set a time limit or turn off the YouTube Shorts feed completely within a supervised account.
On the YouTube app, in the family centre, parents can select 'time management' on their child's account.
They can set the daily Shorts feed limit, including to zero minutes per day.
When a child reaches their daily limit, a message will appear letting them know and will prevent them from scrolling the Shorts feed for the remainder of the day.
"Today, parents in Ireland and across Europe can set the amount of time their teens spend on Shorts, including to zero minutes per day - an industry-first parental control," said Dr Garth Graham, Global Head of YouTube Health.
"We believe parents should be in the driver's seat and the new Shorts feed limit helps them to tailor their family’s viewing experience," Dr Graham said.
Last month, a California jury found that YouTube's parent company Google, and Meta, were liable for designing platforms that are addictive.
Both companies said they disagreed with the verdict and would be appealing.
A spokesperson for Google said after the decision that the case misunderstood YouTube "which is a responsibly built streaming platform, not a social media site."
