Holidaymakers are 'heading towards the Western Medditerranean and avoiding the Eastern Med,' the CEO of the Irish Travel Agents Association said today

"There is anxiety, but no panic yet" amongst airlines, according to the CEO of the Irish Travel Agents Association Clare Dunne.

Speaking to RTÉ's Morning Ireland following warning of jet fuel shortages across Europe, she said that airlines "don't ever really have more than three to six weeks of aviation fuel in storage."

There are also various sources of jet fuel supplies for Ireland, Ms Dunne added. Imports from the Middle East account for roughly one fifth of the entire supplies, with aviation fuel is also sourced from North, America, Venezuela and the North Sea.

When it comes to consumer trends this summer, Ms Dunne said that Spain and Portugal "have been the big winners" with holidaymakers "heading towards the Western Mediterranean" and "avoiding the Eastern Med."

Despite the uncertainty, the expert advised to book holiday travel rather than wait.

"If there are going to be cancellations, there are going to be less flights available. So availability then will affect demand and then prices will go up," she said.

The chief executive of the ITAA said the existing protections under EU-261 Passenger Rights as well as additional security when booking a packaged holiday mean that passenger will receive a refund if their flight is cancelled.

Speaking about the Aer Lingus cancellations reported over the weekend, Ms Dunne said that travel agents "haven't seen huge disruption from it."

"It's only beween 1% and 2% of their flights", she said with multi-frequency flights most affected and passengers "rebooked the day before or the day after".
