Departments allowed to spend €4.1bn above original plan in December 2024

The Government has agreed to allow departments to increase spending by a total of €4.1 billion for 2025 over revised estimates where were announced at the end of last year.

While some additional spending was published in the Summer Economic Statement, further allocations were agreed in two tranches by Government this week and last. They total gross expenditure of €2.9 billion.

The developments follow repeated criticism from the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council that the Government has continuously failed to adhere to its spending commitments outlined in the Budget.

The latest figures show the Department of Education and Youth will see its expenditure rise by €580m beyond its original allocation.

The Department of Health has been granted an increase of €302m.

The additional spending for Social Protection will be €265m, while the extra expenditure for Transport will be €279m.

The Department of Children, Disability and Equality will be able to spend an extra €213m.

The Department of Agriculture will receive a further €98m.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade will see its increase spending by €155m.

A further €157m has been allocated to the Department of Justice.

A further €34.6m has been agreed for the Office of Public Works.
