Fixed broadband subscriber lines increased to 1.61 million in the final quarter of last year, according to new figures from the Commission for Communications Regulation, ComReg.

The data shows that subscriber lines were up 0.6% on the previous quarter, and 2.2% compared to the same three month period the previous year.

Over 500,000 of these lines were fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) subscriber lines - representing over 31% of total fixed broadband subscriber lines in the final quarter of 2022, up from 23.6% in the same time the previous year.

According to Eurostat, in 2021 Ireland's household broadband penetration rate, which includes fixed and mobile broadband, was at 93%, which is higher than the EU average of 90%.

On a monthly basis an average fixed residential broadband subscriber line used 412.7 GB of data, an increase of 13.2% since the final quarter of 2021.

Over 57% of broadband subscriber lines had purchased broadband with speeds equal to or greater than 100Mbps, with 31.2% of all fixed broadband subscriber lines with purchased broadband speeds equal to or greater than 500Mbps.

Of the 500,000 FTTP subscriber lines, 72.3% have sold speeds equal to or greater than 500 Mbps.

Total voice traffic minutes increased by 0.7% this quarter, 8.6% lower than in the same quarter in 2021.

Mobile minutes form the majority of voice minutes at 88.9%, with fixed minutes representing the remaining 11.1%.

Mobile voice minutes increased by 0.8% this quarter, while fixed voice minutes decreased by 0.4%.

On a monthly basis an average mobile voice subscriber used 187 minutes, sent 37 texts and used 15.1GB of data.
