Rail passengers are being warned of major disruptions over the upcoming bank holiday weekend due to engineering works between Dublin Connolly station and Bray.

The closure of 18 stations will have implications for some of the 30,000 women taking part in the Women's Mini Marathon on Sunday.

There will be no train or DART services between Dublin Connolly and Greystones due to the works.

DART services will operate between Malahide, Howth and Dublin Connolly stations only, from Saturday morning until Monday night.

The stations that will remain closed over the weekend include: Tara Street, Pearse, Grand Canal Dock, Lansdowne Road, Sandymount, Sydney Parade, Booterstown, Blackrock, Seapoint, Salthill and Monkstown, Dún Laoghaire, Sandycove and Glasthule, Glenageary, Dalkey, Killiney, Shankill, Woodbrook and Bray.

There will be direct bus services in place to accommodate passengers from Dublin Connolly to Greystones as no train or DART services will run on these lines.

A spokesperson for Irish Rail said: "We do examine all events and planning to avoid as much disruption as possible but it’s not always possible to avoid coinciding and we apologise to any affected customers.

"The bank holiday weekends do afford us the time needed to perform works on a greater scale than our usual overnight activities.

"This will afford us the opportunity to perform significant track overhead line substation and retaining wall works to provide for the essential and continued reliability of the service.

"This is the last weekend works that will impact our services through the rest of the summer."

The company said its Leap cards can be used on all TFI public transport services in affected areas, including Dublin Bus and Luas.

Meanwhile, DART and suburban train services in Dublin experienced "significant delays" this morning after a "major" signal fault led to a suspension of services.

The issue was caused by a central computer signalling fault, but trains are moving again.

The fault impacted all DART and Northern Commuter train services, as well as Phoenix Park Tunnel, Rosslare and Sligo services.

John Larson, Internal Communications Manager with Irish Rail, said the fault affecting the network has been rectified but that teams were still working to reduce knock-on delays.

He said that that on top of that, it's a busy weekend where everyone seems to be travelling at the same time.

He apologised for the inconvenience caused, saying that customers can find regular travel updates on the app and website.
