Woman, 40s, dies after Waterford city assault

A woman has died and a man has been arrested following an assault in Waterford city.

Emergency services responded to the incident at a property in the Grange Heights housing estate at around 6.15pm.

Gardaí and the National Ambulance Service attended the scene where a woman was discovered with serious injuries.

The woman, who was in her 40s, was taken to University Hospital Waterford, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Gardaí have said that the Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem examination is due to take place.

A man, aged in his 40s, was arrested at the scene.

He is currently detained at a garda station in the Waterford Division under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The scene is currently preserved to allow for a technical examination to take place.

A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and in incident room has been established at Waterford Garda Station.

A Family Liaison Officer has also been assigned to support the family of the deceased.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

They particularly want to speak to anyone who was in the Grange Heights area between 6pm and 6.30pm.

They also want to speak to anyone who may have camera footage, including CCTV or dash-cam from the area at the time.
