A 65-year-old woman has died after what gardaí described as a serious assault in Ballybrit, Co Galway.
A man in his 30s has been arrested in connection with the incident and is being held at a garda station in the northwest region.
Emergency services were called to the Claí Mór estate on the Old Monivea Road in Galway at around 11.45pm on Friday night, following reports of an assault at an apartment there.
A woman was removed from the scene to University Hospital Galway in a serious condition and died in the early hours of yesterday morning.
A post-mortem examination has taken place but gardaí said the results are not being disclosed for operational reasons.
The scene remains preserved and is being examined by the Garda Technical Bureau.
A man in his 30s is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, meaning he can be questioned for a total of 24 hours before being charged or released.
