An Garda Síochána has said a search for the driver of a car that rammed a garda patrol car in Co Monaghan has been stood down, but they are following a definite line of inquiry.

Two gardaí who were injured in the incident remain in hospital.

In a statement this evening, the Garda Press Office said: "The search for the second male has been stood down. An Garda Síochána are following a definite line of enquiry.

"Both gardaí in the rammed and severely damaged patrol car, a male and a female, remain in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda for assessment of injuries this evening."

A sergeant and a garda were taken to hospital after the Northern Ireland-registered Audi rammed the garda car at Tullycorbett at around 1pm.

Two men fled the scene, but the man believed to be the passenger was arrested shortly afterwards.

He is also suspected of having been involved in an earlier attack on a garda this morning.

The man, who is in his 20s, was stopped and spoken to by plainclothes gardaí on patrol in Co Monaghan at around 11.30am. He became violent and attacked the gardaí, injuring one of them.

The driver is described as being aged in his 20s, medium height and build, wearing a dark grey tracksuit top and grey tracksuit bottoms.

The Garda Representative Association (GRA) said the incidents once again act "as a stark and terrifying reminder" of the dangers that gardaí face on a daily basis while going about their duty.

Deputy General Secretary James Morris Roe said his thoughts were with the injured gardaí and their families and he wished the gardaí a full recovery.
