Waterford City and County Council has said it is continuing to inspect all balconies at an apartment block in the city.

It comes after two children fell from the second-storey balcony of one of the apartments in Mount Suir Manor this day last week.

Both children were hospitalised but have since been discharged.

Waterford City and County Council has launched an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The council has said a "comprehensive technical inspection" of all balconies in Block C of Mount Suir Manor is under way.

Structural engineers are hoping to complete all inspections this week, with tenants asked not to use their balconies until further notice as a precautionary measure.

A spokesperson for the council has said once the inspections have been completed, "a detailed report will be prepared and all necessary actions arising from its findings will be implemented."

In a statement, the spokesperson also said: "The owner management company with responsibility for Blocks A and B confirmed to the council that it has also commenced inspections of all balconies within those blocks.

"While understanding the concern, frustration and inconvenience caused, Waterford City and County Council is advising tenants, as a precautionary measure, that access to balconies is restricted and should be avoided wherever possible until further notice.

"The council continues to work with and provide support to the family and wishes to assure all tenants in Block C of Mount Suir Manor that this incident is being treated with the utmost urgency and seriousness."

Last week, three-year-old Jayden O'Neill and his seven-year-old sister, Nevaeh fell more than 6m after the glass pane at the side of the balcony came away after Jayden ran through it.

The children's father, Ryan said Jayden had suffered a bleed to the brain, and he was thankful they are still alive.

The apartment block has been under the remit of the local authority since 2019.

Residents in the apartment complex have been highlighting issues with their balconies and properties for a number of years.
