Repairing damage caused by Storm Chandra could cost €50m

River Slaney bursts its banks in Enniscorthy
Enniscorthy, Co Wexford was 'devastated' by flooding as Storm Chandra caused the River Slaney to burst its banks

The cost of repair works for public roads, buildings and overblown trees damaged by Storm Chandra is likely to be in the region of €50m.

RTÉ News understands that the Government is working on the estimated figure based on existing and expected requests for additional funding from local authorities.

In the aftermath of Storm Chandra, the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment and the Department of Transport asked local authorities to provide a list of public roads and buildings damaged by the storm.

And while that list has not yet been finalised, senior Government officials have confirmed to RTÉ News that the costs involved will be in the region of €50m.

The repair work is in addition to ordinary repair funds already listed in existing local authority budgets, as well as any additional spending on flood protection projects and separate Government grant support for affected local community groups and businesses.

It includes the cost of repairing damaged roads, flooded buildings and blown down trees, among other incidents caused by Storm Chandra.

The requests for additional repair funding come in the same week as the fallout from Storm Chandra is due to be discussed in the Dáil again later this week.

Last week, during a European Parliament debate in Strasbourg, a number of Irish MEPs also raised the possibility of Ireland applying for extreme weather events financial aid from the EU to help respond to the floods.
