A booklet on emergency preparedness will be sent to every household in the State in the coming weeks.

The booklet will contain what is described as a practical preparedness checklist providing steps on how households and communities can improve their readiness for emergencies.

The information has been compiled by the Office of Emergency Planning, which is part of the Department of Defence.

An information campaign on the topic will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

Today marks the first anniversary of Storm Éowyn, which has been described as one of the most dangerous and destructive storms ever seen in Ireland.

It brought storm-force winds, including severely damaging and destructive gusts of over 184km/h, a record for Ireland.

Storm Éowyn's impact was particularly severe and prolonged in remote and rural communities across the west coast and in the northwest and midlands of the country.

The distribution of a booklet to households was one of the recommendations of the review group, which examined how the country could be better prepared for extreme weather emergencies.

The review also recommended the establishment of community support centres and work on this is underway with local authorities.
