A cyclist has died following a hit-and-run incident near Ballivor, Co Meath, this morning.

The collision, which involved the cyclist and a vehicle, took place on the R156 near Boardsmill National School in the townland of Batterstown at around 9.50am.

The cyclist, a man aged in his 80s, was found unresponsive.

He was then taken to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown, where he was subsequently pronounced dead.

It is understood that the man was from the area and living in the locality.

The driver of the vehicle involved failed to remain at the scene.

A section of the road remained closed for most of today to allow for a technical examination of the scene to take place, but it has since reopened.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.

They are particularly interested in the movements of any heavy goods vehicles in the area between 9.30am and 10am this morning.

Gardaí have also asked that any road users who may camera footage, including dash-cam, to make it available to them.
