A woman has died after being hit by a car on the outskirts of Ashbourne, Co Meath.

The collision, involving a car and a pedestrian, happened on the Dublin Road between Nine Milestone and Coolquay, just south of Ashbourne, at around 7.10pm yesterday evening.

The pedestrian, a woman aged in her 60s, has been named locally as Theresa Morgan. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her body has since been taken to the mortuary at Our Lady's Hospital in Navan, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

The male driver and passenger of the car, who are both aged in their 20s, were taken to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown with non-life threatening injuries.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene and the road is expected to remain closed until mid-afternoon. Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward.

They particularly want to speak to any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 6.30pm and 7.30pm this evening.
