Is it too late for the US to catch up with China on tech?

China has outstripped the United States as a global leader in cutting edge science and technology research, according to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute.

The think tank's "critical technology tracker" shows that over the past two decades, China surged into the lead in 90% of advanced technologies in things like defence, space, energy, robotics and even artificial intelligence - areas the United States once dominated.

For some time, this has worried some policy makers in Washington, like Bob Lighthizer, the US Trade Representative during President Trump's first term, who recently spoke about it at the Council of Foreign Relations in New York, as we hear in this report.
