A man in his 40s has died after getting into difficulty at a scuba diving event in Co Donegal.

Another man, who is in his 60s, was airlifted to hospital in Galway for treatment.

Both men were recovered from the water near the pier in Teileann, west of Killybegs.

It is understood they were taking part in the North West Dive Rally organised by the Donegal Bay Sub Aqua club.

The incident happened at around 12.30pm. The Coast Guard and gardaí were involved in the rescue operation.

The local coroner has been informed and there will be a post-mortem examination.

The rally was due to be held on Saturday and Sunday but has now been cancelled following the death of the diver.
