Representatives for Rory McIlroy have confirmed that he and his wife Erica Stoll have filed for divorce after seven years of marriage.
The couple were married at Ashford Castle in Cong in Co Mayo in April 2017.
A spokesperson for the golfer stressed his desire to ensure what was described as this difficult time "is as respectful and amicable as possible".
The spokesperson said Mr McIlroy will not be making any further comment.
The 35-year-old met Ms Stoll, who is from New York, at the 2012 Ryder Cup in the United States when she was working for the Professional Golfers' Association of America.
The couple have one daughter, who was born in 2020.
Their lavish wedding ceremony, which took place amid tight security, was attended by a number of international celebrities.
Stevie Wonder and his 15-piece band performed at the reception.
