The couple who died in a multi-vehicle collision on the N28 Cork to Ringaskiddy road yesterday have been named locally as 83-year-old Pat Allen and his 82-year-old wife Berna (Bernadette) Allen.

The fatal collision occurred just before 11am yesterday as the couple, who lived in Glenwood in nearby Carrigaline, were driving east towards Haulbowline Park, and the driver of a car transporter was travelling west towards the Shannon Park roundabout.

Up to four cars and the car transporter were involved in the collision which resulted in the fully loaded transporter flipping onto its side across the busy access route to the Port of Ringaskiddy.

The driver of a second car was treated in hospital for non life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the transporter and a third car were medically assessed at the scene, but did not need hositalisation.

Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Seamus McGrath said the incident was a 'dreadful tragedy’.

"The community in Carrigaline is in shock with the news," he said.

"They were a very well known and liked couple in the area. Our deepest sympathies are with their family."

Traffic diversions remained in place until late last night as a detailed examination was carried out by Garda forensic road traffic collision investigators and for the removal of damaged vehicles for further inspection.

Investigating Gardaí at Togher have appealed to anyone who may have seen the collision to come forward.

They have also asked any road users who were travelling on the N28 in the Shannon Park area between 10.45am and 11am, and who may have camera or dashcam footage, to also contact them.
