Police in Vancouver are appealing for witnesses following a hit-and-run in the city in which a 24-year-old Irish man was killed.

It is understood the man was crossing the road with a friend at about 11.30pm on Sunday when he was struck by a car that was being driven at high speed.

The man died at the scene and the driver of the car failed to stop.

Canadian police are appealing for anyone with information or who has video recorded in the area on Sunday night to contact them.

A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the incident and has offered consular assistance to the man's family.
