Gardaí are investigating what they suspect may have been an attempt to collect a dead man's pension.
A man called in to the post office on Staplestown Road in Carlow this morning and asked to collect a pension on behalf of an elderly man, but was told the recipient had to be present.
A short time later two men arrived back with a man in his sixties who collapsed in the post office.
The emergency services and gardaí were called and the man was found dead at the scene
Detectives are now investigating if the man was already dead when he was brought to the post office. They are awaiting the results of a post mortem to determine the time and cause of death.
The State Pathologist and specialists from the Garda Technical Bureau have also been called in. Meanwhile, a nearby house has also been sealed off as a crime scene
In a statement this evening, Gardaí confirmed they are investigating all the circumstances surrounding the unexplained death of an elderly male in the Carlow area.
The services of the Garda Technical Bureau and the Office of the State Pathologist have been requested.
A post mortem will be conducted by the Office of the State Pathologist, the results of which will determine the course of the investigation.
A Garda spokesperson said no further information is available at this time.
