A man in his 80s has died following a traffic collision on the M6 motorway, outside Galway.

Three cars were involved in the incident, which happened shortly after 2pm this afternoon.

Two other people have been taken to hospital with what are described as 'non life-threatening injuries’.

A woman in her 20s and a man in his 70s were brought by ambulance to University Hospital Galway.

The collision occurred on the westbound lane of the dual carriageway, between Junction 18 Rathmorrissey and Junction 19 Oranmore.

The road has been closed to allow emergency service personnel access the scene and diversions are in place.

A technical examination of the crash site is also under way.

Motorists travelling towards Galway from the south, on the M18, are advised to divert at the Kilcolgan junction.

Those heading westwards on the M6 have to divert at the Athenry junction.

Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
