An Garda Síochána will carry out an inquiry after a senior officer who attended a media briefing earlier today subsequently tested positive for Covid-19.

In a statement, it said it can confirm that a member of the force who was present at the briefing received notification of a positive test result a short time later.

It is understood the officer was awaiting the result of the Covid-19 test when he attended the event.

The current health guidelines state that a person must continue to self-isolate while awaiting test results.

The statement said all members of An Garda Síochána are expected to fully comply with Health Service Executive guidelines.

It said the force is in contact with all members of the media who attended the event to advise them of the positive test and the relevant public health advice.

The statement said that HSE guidelines, supported by internal guidance from its chief medical officer, have been circulated to all staff members on numerous occasions.

It said An Garda Síochána will not be providing commentary on the individual status of any members of the force or individual garda stations.

It said measures were put in place at the media briefing in relation to social distancing and masks.

Earlier this month, Garda Commissioner, Drew Harris, had to restrict his movements following contact with a garda officer who subsequently tested positive for Covid-19.

Last week in Kerry, District Court sittings were cancelled for a number of days after a member of the force who had Covid-19 attended court in Tralee.
