Talks between RTÉ management and the RTÉ Trade Union Group over cost savings have been adjourned for a week at the request of management.
In a joint statement, the two sides said that while some progress had been made, a number of issues remain to be resolved.
Last year, the broadcaster announced that it would be seeking €60 million in cost savings over a three-year period - with a significant element of that to come from payroll.
Sources said the current talks are aimed at securing around €5m in payroll savings this year.
It is understood that management has floated the prospect of graduated pay cuts for staff earning over €40,000 a year, with more severe reductions for the higher paid.
However, sources confirmed that a significant gap remains between the two sides on the proposals for pay reductions.
Unions have already indicated that they will resist any attempt to freeze incremental pay increments.
It is understood that certain non-pay issues are also on the table including outsourcing, time off in lieu and leave entitlements.
Late last year, RTÉ also indicated that it was seeking 200 redundancies, as well as planning to move Lyric FM out of Limerick, and to sell the RTÉ Guide.
The Guide was subsequently withdrawn from sale, and a decision on Lyric FM and certain other measures has been deferred pending the outcome of the newly-established Commission on Public Service Broadcasting.
Seventy of the 200 redundancies will arise when the National Symphony Orchestra transfers to the National Concert Hall.
An RTÉ spokesperson said that move is expected to take place later this year.
