In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help remove excess carbon from the atmosphere, the Government wants 400 million trees planted in the next 20 years. 

Ireland currently has the lowest proportion of land devoted to forestry in the EU - just 11%.

More than 80% of our land is devoted to cattle - which produce most of the greenhouse gases in agriculture.

With only 10% of beef farms profitable, the Government wants farmers to diversify into forestry.
