A 21-year-old student who was critically injured in a kayaking incident in Glencar near Killarney, Co Kerry last Saturday has died.

Aisling O'Connor, from Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, was among a group of 20 from the University of Limerick kayaking club on a trip to the area.

She and a 21-year-old male student got into difficulty in rough waters near Lake Caragh at around 2.30pm last Saturday.

A multi-agency HSE lead rescue operation was launched and the two were airlifted to University Hospital Kerry in Tralee.

Ms O'Connor was a third year Industrial Biochemistry student at UL.

College President Dr Des Fitzgerald said he was very saddened to inform students of her untimely and tragic death and passed on his deepest sympathy to her parents, her two brothers and two sisters.

He said the college would work to support Aisling's friends, class and club mates in coming to terms with their loss, and that the college Chaplaincy, UL Eist and UL student life groups were there to help any student who needed them.

The male student remains in a stable condition.
