Navan Mayor Tommy Reilly described Mikey as a "great little sportsman", and said the Leddy family were very involved in sports in the town.
He said the people of Navan will rally around the family, adding: "People work so hard to have a foreign holiday, and then a tragedy like this happens.
"Words can't describe it. I'm so sad about the whole thing. We will rally behind them, and whatever help we can give them in the town of Navan, I will ensure I will lead that help."
The Department of Foreign Affairs has said it was providing consular assistance to the family.
