Green Party candidate Saoirse McHugh has been eliminated in the 11th count in Midlands-North-West.

Five candidates are now battling for the three remaining seats following the election of Fine Gael's Mairead McGuinness on Monday.

The distribution of Ms McHugh’s votes is expected to favour Brendan Smith ahead of Peter Casey, but the Fianna Fáil TD is well short of the numbers he needs to be in contention.

It is expected that the Midlands North West count will conclude this evening.
