A 32-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his mother in Ardee, Co Louth on Tuesday.
Tomasz Piotrowski, with an address at Cherrybrook also in Ardee, was remanded in custody for a week.
Elzbieta Piotrowska, 57, a mother-of-two who was originally from Poland, was attacked with an axe and killed in the Clonmore estate on Tuesday morning.
Her husband was at work at the time and her adult daughter was in Poland.
Garda Sergeant Jim McComisky gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.
He told the court he arrested Tomasz Piotrowski last night and when he was charged with his mother's murder he made no comment.
Tomasz Piotrowski did not speak during the brief hearing and was supplied with an interpreter who sat beside him in the dock.
His solicitor told the court he had serious concerns for his client's mental health.
Judge John Cheatle directed the accused receive all appropriate medical attention and granted him free legal aid.
He is due to appear again by video link at Cloverhill District Court next week.
